In searching for my County Kerry Daltons, I have explored a great deal of Irish related data.  As the searching progressed, I have extracted  much data in the hope that it will prove useful to others. The majority of Daltons of Irish ancestry are to be found in the coastal counties of Great Britain, particularly in the Western areas.  It is likely that starting about 1800 and later, during the Irish Potato Famine of the late 1840's, a large number of predominantly Catholic Irish people went to Great Britain in search of employment and marriage, and some then migrated to North America and Australia.  A number of Daltons of Irish ancestry were  enumerated in the 1881 Census of Great Britain, (England, Scotland, Wales and nearby islands), on census day, April 3rd, 1881. They have been extracted by county from the LDS microfiche Surname Index of the 1881 Census of Great Britain and number over 560 persons, or 8.5% of the total, 6718, Daltons who were enumerated in this Census.

In this listing, the population of Daltons of Irish descent includes unmarried males and females, husbands and widowers and their children born in Ireland and who emigrated to Great Britain.  It does not include Irish-born widows or wives, since their maiden names are different from their husbands.  In the case of an Irish born widow with children, the census record does not show whether her deceased husband was British or Irish.

In some cases, the Irish county and parish is known.  It is then easier to obtain further genealogical information from existing sources.  Clues as to the names of parents and grandparents in Ireland may be derived from the way children were named according to Irish tradition, provided that the parents retained the same custom when they left Ireland.  Although it may not have been written in Catholic baptismal records, the children would quite frequently be given a middle name, that of the saint upon whose feast day they were born. For example: the feast day of St. Anne is traditionally observed on July 26th; and the feast day of St. James is traditionally observed on July 25th. This census abstract of Daltons of Irish Birth and Ancestry by county is by head of household, age, residence, place of birth, county and parish - if known, and occupation.  Occupation of children is not given to conserve space.  Generally, children 14 and under would be listed as scholars; children over 14 would be listed as employed in a specific occupation.  Standard abbreviations are used for relatives and county of birth. Extractions were made from census microfilm copies made by the LDS and the actual census sheets are kept in the British Archives.  Additional information on baptisms, marriages and deaths can be obtained from available civil and church records.  Liverpool and Manchester in County Lancashire, and London in County Middlesex are the principal cities of residence since Liverpool and London were major ports of embarkation for emigrants.
