YORKSHIRE

Dalton records from over 25 Yorkshire Parishes are contained in this file. They include birth, marriage and burial records and may not be complete, nor do they represent all of the Yorkshire Parishes.

Concentration on Yorkshire as the initial English County offering is an attempt to help our American Daltons who believe that their ancestry lies in Yorkshire. As you browse the data it will become clear how many Johns and Williams there are in the family of Daltons. We hope that you can make a connection with your family.

In addition to the Yorkshire Parish files, York Cemetery Burial data, (publicly unavailable) is listed.  Details contained within this Burial data along with the social statements made in the East Riding Court Cases allow insights into the life and times of our Dalton ancestors in 18th and 9th Century England. The data  contains over 1400 names and may be searched using the section links, the "Find on this page..." button below, or the Edit/Find function of your browser.  It is the onus of the user to verify the data.

Our thanks goes to DGS Member Cathy Negrycz for providing the Yorkshire Baptism data, added on 17 August, 2014.

YORK CEMETERY BURIALS 1850-1900    Top

By 1858, most of the York cemeteries listed above had closed and the burials were almost exclusively at York Cemetery. Millicent Craig acquired the following data and has formatted it by family wherever possible. There are 125 entries and all genealogically related information has been preserved including the cause of death.  Pulmonary problems were a primary cause.
Data from 1900 to current time can be purchased from the web master, Hugh Murray of York Cemetery at: http://homepages.tesco.net/~hugh.murray

EAST RIDING COURT CASES  1710-1826    Top

Dalton Participants compiled by Millicent V.Craig

The following court appearances have been extracted from the Index of the East Riding of Yorkshire Archives and Records Service.  These are Public Records and the  full content of each record may be obtained upon request.  Visit: http://www.a2a.pro.gov.uk

The earliest record in this series is 1710 and the purpose for extracting them was to learn whether any offenses were serious enough to warrant transportation to the US prior to the War of Independence (1776), or to Australia.  Most offenses were not serious but a continual offender, e.g. Alice Dalton of Patrington, may have been a candidate.

Where there are several Dalton entries in the same village or town they are clustered in chronological order. It allows the reader to glean some historical perspective into the values and lives of our Daltons in 18th Century England. Not much different than today!

EAST HAUXWELL

Bulmer's Directory (1890)
The townships of East and West Hauxwell comprise respectively 1,249 and 892 acres, and are valued for rating purposes at £936 and £607. The population of the former in 1881 was 95, and of the latter 40. The estate, which comprises the two townships, with all manorial rights, formerly belonged to the Daltons, and a stone column in the grounds in front of the hall, thus records an act of generosity of a daughter and heiress of this family; "In memory of Mrs. Eliza Dalton, daughter and one of the co-heiresses of Fr. Marmaduke Dalton, who, in regard to her family, restored this estate to her uncle, Fr. Charles Marmaduke Dalton, Gentleman, Usher of the Black Rod, in the year 1717." It afterwards came into the possession of the Gales, and on the deaths of the Misses Gale, it was inherited by their niece, the wife of Col. Hamlet Coote Wade, who, thereupon, assumed the name of Dalton, in addition to his own.*
* Just as these sheets were going to press, the newspapers announce the death of the gallant Colonel on the 8th of December, 1889, at the age of 80. He was a magistrate for the North Riding, and succeeded the Duke of Leeds as commander of the North York Militia.
The Hall is a good stone mansion, erected about the time of James I., and consists of a centre and two wings, surrounded by a well-wooded park. The north entrance gateway to the latter bears the arms of the Dalton family.
