ALASKA / YUKON

Settlement of Alaskan Territory began circa 1784 by the Russians. The United States purchased the territory from the Russia in 1867. The Gold Rush of the 1890s brought thousands of people from the United States and Canada, and as far away as Europe and Australia. They went to the Alaskan Territory and the adjacent Yukon Territory of Canada. There were additional influxes of people with the construction of US military bases during World War II, and with the ongoing frontier atmosphere of Alaska. Over the years, some of the settlers married Native Alaskans and some Native Alaskans adapted the Dalton surname.

Alaska became the 49th State of the Union on Jan. 3, 1959. Today, it is the largest state in size and the smallest in population. Because of its young history, genealogical resources for the state are not easily accessible. It is the onus of the researcher to verify data and fill in the missing blanks.

Our sincere gratitude is extended to DGS member Mike Dalton of Oregon for his efforts in providing all of the Alaska / Yukon information on this page.

NATIVE DALTONS    Top

The original native peoples of Alaska adapted Christian forenames and European surnames when they came into contact with settlers of European ancestry and adapted their religion and culture going into the 20th Century.
The Tlingits were originally in Southern Coastal Alaska. Hoonah is the largest Tlingit village in Alaska. It is located on Chichagot Island near Juneau on the Southern Coast of Alaska. The Presbyterians established a mission here in 1881. Tenakee Springs is a Tlingit settlement on Chichagot Island. Klawock is a Tlingit settlement on Prince of Wales Island in Southern Alaska.

The Tsimshians were originally in British Columbia. They became established at a place named Metlakatla on Prince Rupert Island, British Columbia in 1862 by a Anglican minister. Some 800 Tsimhians removed to a US Indian Reservation named Metlakatla on Annette Island (AI) in 1887, which is near Juneau on the Southern Coast of Alaska. It is the only Indian Reservation in Alaska today.

The foregoing was abstracted from the rootsweb.com page: Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian genealogy of Alaska. More extensive genealogy can be found on this website. With three known exceptions, the listed people are of Native Alaskan origin.
